Kindergarten: Here We Come

On Friday we enrolled in Kindergarten. Today we enrolled in the in the DUAL Language program at Keppel. Not only will Caity be learning kinder in English but for that other half of the day she will be
taught in Korean. She will be in school 5 days a week from 8am to 205pm except for Thursdays when they are dismissed an hour early.


PROGRAM MODEL:
50/50 Two Way Dual Immersion Model
50% of intruction in English
50% of instruction in Korean
Switch order every month


KOREAN DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM (KDLP):
Goal 1: Bilingual and Bi-literate
-Fluency in Rwo Languages in areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading,  Writing and Academic Language
Goal 2: Succeed Academically
Goal 3: Develop appreciation of and respect for other cultures


IN DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM:
-All subjects are taught in both languages
-No repetition on lessons
-No translation but language support by peers
-Skills and knowledge learned in one language transfer to the other
-Native language proficiency is a powerful indicator of the rate at which Language 2 is acquired


KEY RESEARCH FINDINGS:
When compared to their peers in Mainstream Programs dual language students:
-Scored as high or higher in English reading and mathematics
-Earned higher SAT scores particularly in the verbal section of the test
-By the 5th year in a DLP, students outperformed all comparison groups and remained high throughout their schooling
